Power outages cause premature end to 2023 Durban July

Horseracing and betting organisation, Gold Circle has apologised for the inconvenience to racing fans, stakeholders, and sponsors after a jockey protest led to the abandonment of the final three races on the 2023 Durban July card on Saturday.

It says in a statement the unanticipated implementation of power outages was made contrary to arrangements with the City Of Durban, which ultimately led to the jockeys citing unsafe conditions as the reason for their refusal to ride.

“Gold Circle apologised unreservedly for the inconvenience to racing fans, stakeholders and all of their valued sponsors after a jockey protest led to the abandonment of the final three races on the Hollywoodbets Durban July card on Saturday.”

Gold Circle advise that this was entirely out of their control and a full investigation has been launched.
The day remains an unqualified success with over 45 000 people in attendance.

The R5-million Grade 1 Hollywoodbets Durban July at Greyville was won by jockey, Kabelo Matsunyane on Winchester Mansion.
Race favorite, See It Again came second.
