Fort Hare Convocation calls for Academic Fraud Independent Investigation

Fort Hare Convocation, the body representing alumni and convocants of the University of Fort Hare, has called for an independent investigation into allegations of academic fraud that have plagued the institution.

Addressing the media, Convocation President, Adv Andile Mini expressed their deep concern over the academic fraud-related issues that have tarnished the reputation of the university.

The Convocation’s request for an independent investigation comes as part of their ongoing efforts to address the allegations of academic fraud and restore the university’s reputation.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the Convocation has escalated the matter to the attention of the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr. Blade Nzimande.

By involving the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, he said the aim to ensure that the investigation is conducted impartially and thoroughly, with the ultimate goal of upholding the integrity of the institution and safeguarding the future of its students and faculty.

They have urged the minister to initiate an independent investigation into these matters, emphasizing the need for an entity that is separate from the university and possesses the necessary expertise to address the systemic academic, policy, and process issues at hand.

The Convocation firmly believes that the investigation should be carried out by an entity with specialized knowledge and understanding, which may not fall within the purview of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU).

They argue that such a specialized investigation will be better equipped to provide clear recommendations for remedial actions and the restoration of the university’s academic integrity.

“It is crucial to note that we do not question the capabilities of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), However, we firmly believe that an investigation into the systemic academic issues requires specialized knowledge and understanding that may not fall within the SIU’s purview.”

Therefore, we call for a ministerial investigation that will comprehensively address this matter with utmost urgency.” Said Mini.
