In a statement released earlier today, President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his deep condolences to the government and people of Namibia following the passing of Founding President His Excellency Dr Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma. Dr Nujoma, who was 95 years old, played a pivotal role in Namibia’s struggle for independence and the liberation of southern Africa.
On behalf of the government and citizens of South Africa, President Ramaphosa extended his sympathies to the Founding First Lady of Namibia, Her Excellency Kovambo Nujoma, as well as to the broader Nujoma and Kondombolo families during this difficult time. The South African President also reached out to Namibian President His Excellency Dr Nangolo Mbumba, noting the profound loss to the Namibian people, especially coming just a year after the passing of President Hage Geingob.
“As neighbours and compatriots, South Africa is united in grief with Namibians who have lost the leader of the Namibian revolution, who is inseparable from our own history of struggle and liberation,” President Ramaphosa said in his tribute.
Dr Sam Nujoma, a distinguished freedom fighter, divided his revolutionary efforts between leading Namibia’s fight against South African colonial rule and contributing to the liberation of South Africa from apartheid. Under his leadership, the Ovambo People’s Organisation, the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO), and the People’s Liberation Army of Namibia stood resolutely against the formidable colonial and apartheid forces.
Nujoma’s steadfast dedication inspired not only the Namibian people but also the broader region, offering hope and resistance despite the challenges they faced. His leadership was integral to Namibia’s peaceful path to independence in 1990, which, according to Ramaphosa, ignited the belief in the inevitability of South Africa’s own liberation.
“President Nujoma’s leadership of a free Namibia laid the foundation for the solidarity and partnership our two countries share today – a partnership we will continue to deepen as neighbours and friends,” President Ramaphosa added.
The South African President also expressed gratitude for the extended lifetime of Dr Nujoma, noting how he dedicated his life to serving his nation. In conclusion, Ramaphosa offered his heartfelt wishes for healing, saying, “May his soul rest in peace and may our neighbours find solace in his enduring legacy.”
