North West police are actively searching for an alleged illegal mining kingpin and ringleader who escaped from custody. The fugitive, identified as James Neo Tshoaeli, commonly known as “Tiger,” resurfaced last week from Shaft 11 of the Stilfontein mine in the North West. Police suspect he has since gone into hiding.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that Tiger, a Lesotho national, was never officially booked into any of the stations where other illegal miners are being held. Additionally, he is not listed as a patient at any local hospital.
āTiger is a fugitive of justice and is considered dangerous,ā Mathe stated.
According to statements gathered by police, Tiger has been implicated as one of the key figures controlling illegal mining operations underground. Some miners who have resurfaced accuse him of orchestrating violence, including alleged assaults, torture, and even deaths, as captured in video evidence currently in police possession. He is also suspected of hoarding food, depriving other miners of essential supplies.
Investigation and Accountability
Acting North West Provincial Commissioner, Major General Patrick Asaneng, has ordered a full-scale operation to track down Tiger, mobilizing maximum resources to ensure his recapture. He also directed an internal investigation into how the fugitive managed to escape between Shaft 11 and the Stilfontein police holding cells.
āExtensive investigations and tracing operations are underway to identify officials who may have aided his escape,ā Mathe confirmed.
Background: Operation Vala Mgodi
The escape is a setback for Operation Vala Mgodi, a government initiative launched in December 2023 to combat illegal mining nationwide. In response to the incident, Asaneng expressed deep disappointment, calling it an āembarrassmentā to the ongoing operation.
āHe has vowed that those responsible for this security breach will be held accountable and that Tiger will be recaptured,ā Mathe added.
Public Appeal
Authorities are urging anyone with information about Tigerās whereabouts to contact the Stilfontein police station immediately.
