The mother of Miss Universe runner-up Chidimma Adetshina, Anabela Rungo, has been arrested in Cape Town. Rungo was detained on Saturday at a property in the city along with her underage child, according to a statement from Department of Home Affairs spokesperson Siya Qoza.
Last year, Rungo and her daughter lost their South African citizenship when it was revealed that fraudulent documents were used during the Miss SA pageant. While Adetshina was born in South Africa, she later relocated to Nigeria, her father’s home country.
Qoza emphasized that Rungo, who holds a Mozambican passport, has shown complete disregard for the legal consequences of her actions. She was processed by Home Affairs and handed over to the police for an ongoing investigation led by the Hawks. The Department of Social Services and the police child protection unit were also involved to ensure the safety of the minor child.
Chidimma Adetshina, who had never visited Nigeria before, won Nigeria’s beauty pageant and subsequently competed in Miss Universe, where she was crowned first runner-up.
