Load Shedding to End by Week’s End, Minister Assures South Africa

South Africa’s Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, assured the public on Sunday that the country would be free from load shedding by the end of the week. Speaking at a media briefing alongside Eskom executives, Ramokgopa expressed confidence that the power crisis would be resolved, returning the country to normal conditions. “By the end of the week, there will be no load shedding,” he stated, emphasizing that load shedding should be viewed as “extremely abnormal.”

Eskom had implemented Stage 6 load shedding early Sunday due to the loss of five generation units at Majuba and four units at Camden power stations. Eskom CEO, Dan Marokane, confirmed that six of the ten affected units had already been restored and more would return to service later that day. Marokane explained that the loss at Majuba was triggered by an overload on a transformer, which caused a cascading failure of multiple units. He reassured the public that the situation was under control and that corrective measures were being taken.

Ramokgopa apologized for the recent setbacks, acknowledging the frustration and disappointment felt by citizens. He stressed that efforts to address the root causes of load shedding were underway and pointed out that the issue was technical rather than due to sabotage. He also reiterated that Eskom and his department were committed to resolving the power supply problems, following the Energy Action Plan laid out by the President in 2022.

The Minister reassured the nation that, despite the current challenges, the government was focused on eradicating load shedding for good, ensuring a stable and reliable energy future for South Africa.
