A high-stakes rescue operation led by the Hawks has successfully secured the safe return of a kidnapped 45-year-old American pastor following a dramatic shootout in KwaMagxaki, Gqeberha.
The rescue, conducted on Tuesday, 15 April, was the result of a swift, intelligence-driven operation involving multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit, the Anti-Gang Unit, Crime Intelligence, and the Tactical Response Team.
According to authorities, the pastor had been held at a safe house when law enforcement agents closed in on the premises. Upon arrival, officers identified a vehicle on the property. As they moved in, suspects reportedly attempted to flee and opened fire on the officers, sparking a fierce exchange of gunfire. Three suspects were fatally wounded during the confrontation.
The kidnapped pastor was found inside the vehicle used by the suspects and was miraculously unharmed. He received immediate medical attention and has since been declared in excellent condition.
“This rescue operation underscores the power of coordinated intelligence and tactical excellence,” said Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya, Provincial Head of the Hawks in the Eastern Cape. “Our teams displayed unwavering bravery under fire, ensuring not only the safety of the victim but also delivering a strong message to those who dare threaten our communities.”
Authorities have praised the professionalism and dedication of all officers involved and extended gratitude to international partners, local communities, and the media for their cooperation and vigilance.
