Dr Mrwetyana leaves the Central University of Technology as Registrar

After eight years as registrar of the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT), Dr. Nothemba Pinky Mrwetyana has ended her illustrious career of 40 years in the higher education sector.

Dr. Mrwetyana, a former student of the University of Fort Hare and later its Registrar as part of a team led by Professor Derrick Swartz, credited for leading a profound turnaround strategy at the institution in the 1990s.

She served two 5-year terms as Registrar before she assumed duties as the Registrar of the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) on 01 September 2013.

Dr. Mrwetyana has always been lauded as a passionate and resilient leader, who always encouraged her team to reach for greater achievements, especially the women who have worked with her.

Prof. David Ngidi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor : Teaching and Learning at CUT, praised her for lending her wisdom to help steer the university’s ship. “She’s a storm calmer, especially when the temperature would flare up during meetings, she would say: ‘Colleagues calm down,”’ and we would listen. She has been motherly, always offering many of us a shoulder to cry on. We will miss her wisdom and deep knowledge and understanding of the higher education sector, which she has used so intelligently to guide us,” said Prof. Ngidi.

She holds a BA (History and Anthropology majors); UED (English and History Methods); BEd; and MEd (Instructional Technology) from the University of Fort Hare; an MEd (Curriculum Studies: History) from Rhodes University; and a PhD (Technology in Education) from the University of Natal.

Armed with Management Coaching qualifications from the University of Stellenbosch, Dr. Mrwetyana plans to share her expertise and experience earned over time to benefit society through mentorship, coaching, and training when she leaves the institution.
