Motsepe Foundation Christmas concert

Top SA acts take the stage at EL beach bash

By Sisonke Labase

Revellers were helplessly happy during the annual ‘Christmas for the People’ annual bash the the East London beach fron last Sunday.
The event, which is sponsored by The Motsepe Foundation, owned by Sundowns manger and owner Patrice Motsepe, and Buffalo City Metro (BCM) event started with a toy giveaway on Saturday by Mr Motsepe and BCM Mayor, Ms Zukiswa Ncitha, to children in disadvantaged areas.

Jozi was surely empty on Sunday as all the bigwigs in South African entertainment were in East London to entertain the crowd. The event was a huge success with thousands at the Esplanade to experience the music extravaganza. The line-up was hot and all presented freely to the public for Christmas celebrations.

Thembi Seete, Boom Shaka from the much-loved SABC 1 dance show Jika Majika, hosted the show alongside popular Amaza from uMhlobo Wenene FM. Their high energy got the crowd roaring despite the rainy weather.

The concert was kicked started by the award winning kwaito group Big Nuz, with their hit songs Umlilo and 4000 to get the party started on a serious high.

DJ Nathi from Metro FM got on the decks and played classics that got the masses moving.

The Afro-pop sensation Mafikizolo has regrouped with a much awaited album set to be released next year. The duo tore up the stage with hits like as Udakwa Njalo and Emlanjeni as well as an exclusive performance of their new single Khona.

The hip hop heads got their dose of music to jam to from DJ Naves and Sphectacula from Metro FM who brought the house down with their mix. The crowd went crazy when their very own, home grown Zahara performed, she even performed alongside DJ Sbu who did house remixes to Zahara’s hits. Another favourite among locals is Berita the new lady of Afro-soul with her single Thandolwethu.

But the performance of the day for me had to be Micasa; this live house band sure knows how to bring it!

Their front man, J’Something’s, smooth vocals and dance moves got the masses buzzing and dancing to their house sounds. DJ Lulo Cafe, DJ Cleo and the Teddy Bears were in full swingso the East London people really got a treat of sound music and dance.
